It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Jordan Shifrin, founding partner of Kovitz Shifrin Nesbit.
Jordan was not only instrumental in establishing the firm in 1983, but he also helped shape the principles and culture that continue to guide KSN today. From the moment he opened the firm’s doors, Jordan instilled a set of values that remain central to KSN’s identity: simplicity, responsiveness, kindness, efficiency, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Those ideals influence how the firm serves clients, collaborates internally, and approaches the practice of law.
Jordan was widely recognized as one of the most respected attorneys in the field of common interest community association law, advising condominium, homeowner, and townhome associations for decades. Throughout his career, he counseled thousands of associations through complex legal challenges while helping boards and managers navigate governance, operations, and long-term planning within their communities.
Beyond his work with clients, Jordan was a dedicated mentor. Many attorneys who practice today benefited from his guidance, encouragement, and leadership as they developed their careers. His professional accomplishments were widely recognized. Jordan was a Fellow of the Community Associations Institute (CAI) College of Community Association Attorneys, a charter member of Leading Lawyers, and a charter member of Super Lawyers, where he was recognized on the Illinois Super Lawyers list for more than ten consecutive years.
Jordan was also a prolific writer and thought leader in the community association industry. He authored numerous articles and published several books on community association issues. His writing often blended legal insight with humor, philosophy, and memorable movie quotes that reflected his distinctive personality and love for film.
Outside of the office, Jordan had a wide range of interests. He grew up on Chicago’s north side and earned both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in history from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Before becoming an attorney, he worked as a clothing salesman, insurance adjuster, and teacher. These experiences helped shape his pragmatic and people-focused approach.
KSN Managing Partner Ryan Shpritz expressed what many at KSN feel about Jordan’s lasting influence: “Jordan was one our founding partners – a builder, shaper, and curator of Kovitz Shifrin Nesbit. For those who knew him, he was a dynamic and fun personality. He was a mentor to many of us, guiding us, coaching us, and cheering us as we grew and developed at this firm. While he retired years ago, his impact remains in so many parts of KSN.
One of our core philosophies was his: ‘Return your phone calls and emails promptly, get your work done quickly, and be nice to people.’ He helped set the table for KSN to be the leader in the industry. He was so proud of this firm, its people, and what it has become. He was a one of a kind. He will be missed.”
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Jordan’s family, friends, colleagues, and the many clients whose lives and communities he influenced throughout his career. His impact on the legal profession and the community association industry will not be forgotten.
