Here are nine considerations for board member to ensure these events are not only fun but also safe and compliant with association rules and local laws.

1. Community Involvement and Activities: Encourage community involvement by organizing various activities suitable for all ages. This can include games, contests, a showcase of local talent, a scavenger hunt, BBQ, outdoor movie night, arts and crafts. And don’t forget to encourage residents to participate in the cleanup!

2. Involving Residents in Planning: Engaging association residents in the planning process will lighten the workload for the board. Form a planning committee or ask for volunteers to assist in different aspects of the block party.

3. Working with Vendors: Hiring vendors for catering, music, or entertainment can take the block party to the next level. However, board members should work with the association’s attorney to review vendor contracts, confirm appropriate insurance coverage, and clearly outline the scope of services.

4. Understanding and Managing Liability: One of the primary concerns for any community event is liability, particularly in the event of an injury or property damage. Ensure that your association has adequate insurance coverage for a block party event in the event of an incident or injury.
