As Cook County, Illinois landlords are well-aware, each year Cook County issues an eviction moratorium over the holidays and winter months. This year is no different.

Presiding Judge Kenneth Wright recently issued the court order that prohibits the Sheriff of Cook County from performing any evictions between December 19, 2022 and January 4, 2023.

The eviction moratorium is also in place on any day over the winter when:

  • the temperature is 15 degrees or less, or
  • extreme weather conditions endanger the health and welfare of the people being evicted.

If you are a landlord waiting for the Cook County Sheriff to execute an eviction, be prepared for longer delays.

The Sheriff is currently reporting a 4-5 week timeframe from placing the eviction to performance of the physical eviction. This timeline will very likely be extended through January and February due to the eviction moratorium.
