As noted on the City of Chicago website:

“The Senior Citizen Sewer Exemption entitles seniors aged 65 or over, residing in their own residence with separate metered water service or a separate city water assessment for that residential unit, to an exemption from payment of the sewer service charge for their residence. This exemption provides substantial savings to seniors.”

Eligibility requirements for the sewer service charge exemption (must meet all to apply):

  • 65 years of age or older
  • Owner of the residential unit
  • Occupy the residential unit as your principal place of residence
  • The residential unit must have a separate water meter or assessed account

If you are eligible to apply for the Senior Sewer Rebate based on the above criteria, you will need to provide:

  • Proof of age (State or Federal ID with date of birth)
  • Proof of ownership (ex. deed or property tax bill), and
  • Proof of residency (ex. water bill or property tax bill)

Note: Persons 65 or older who live in a condominium unit, townhouse, or cooperative unit without a separate metered water service can still apply for a refund ($50/calendar year) rather than an exemption. The application for the Senior Citizen Sewer Service Charge Exemption can be found here. The online application can be found here. Completed applications and all necessary paperwork need to be submitted before July 1st, 2017.
